In February 2023, the Pico Ski Education Foundation and Pico Ski Club Leadership completed its fundraising campaign to further improve the Pico Junior Racing Development Venue. With the goal of advancing all of the PSC Race Program's preferred training and racing areas, enhancements to A-Slope on "Little Pico" have been completed, creating more favorable racing and training terrain, trail access and surface conditions.
ANNE & JOE JONES SNOWMAKING CAMPAIGN
Anne and Joe Jones were ski-racing pioneers. Their dedication to skiing and community touched many and inspired generations of athletes and coaches throughout Vermont. In 1956, while coaching for the Pico Ski Club, Anne and Joe formed the Mid-Vermont Junior Skiing Council to promote children’s skiing, foster inter-club competition, and develop elite-caliber ski racers from the region. Northern and Southern Vermont Clubs soon followed, and in 1971, working with leaders from around the state, Joe co-founded the Vermont Alpine Racing Association (VARA), the first statewide ski racing association in the United States.
Anne and Joe’s work with the Pico Ski Club and neighboring Killington Ski Club made a lasting impact on their athletes and was instrumental in the success of some very notable Pico alumni including Olympians Harry “Rebel” Ryan, Rick and Suzie Chaffee, and Mike Gallagher, as well as numerous NCAA collegiate athletes, VARA coaches, and future community leaders.
The Jones family has always had a special love of Pico and the Pico Ski Racing Community. It is an honor for the Pico Ski Education Foundation to commemorate the renovation of the A Slope junior skiing facility in the name of Anne and Joe Jones.
More information on Anne and Joe Jones and their impact on ski racing in Vermont can be found by viewing the Jones Tribute below. Additional Tributes honoring Anne & Joe Jones have been provided by former student and skiing legend, Rick Chaffee, and by early Mid-Vermont Council Pico Coaches, Greg McClallen and Bonnie Heald.
